‘…Into The Light…Out From The Light…’

The Arches presents the work of two recently graduated photographers from Glasgow School of Art- Jeff Edwards and Simone Kubik. This exhibition is a juxtapose between their practices. As a result of this comparison certain long-standing, fundamental ideas of art are examined. Both the depiction of the human form and the values of light and darkness are at the core of this scrutiny. A huge host of comments concerning light, colour, shape and texture can join and separate their works. From Edwards’ partial, close up views and destructed surfaces swallowed up by darkness to Kubik’s studio-like full frontal, arresting poses flooded with stark lighting and smooth finish. And just as choice was presented to the artist’s in how to depict the body choice in our understanding and appreciating of the work is presented to us. Both artist and audience have before them countless, boundless directions and they will behave similarly- just as one goes one way the other goes the other.

Within my practice I am unaware of ‘sub text’ or ‘concept’ until the work is done, as for me It is all done subconsciously, I work in a tactile and intuitive way. My primary focus as a photographer is purely visual, where image supersedes any pre-contextualized meaning that has its basis in language: Formalism over conceptualism.

Negating the idea and concept of the perfect negative and perfect print, tactility and physically altering the image in a way which works with it rather than simply to it.

What is skin? Is it flesh, metal, paper, celluloid? I like to see the plain of a photograph as skin, just one layer of the greater whole.

This is the second and final piece for my “One Every Second” work. It was created by taking 300 images and just as the title states they were taken one every second. Each print was then printed out and individually inked by hand then scanned and put back into sequence.

The Final print is 7ft x 3 1/2ft
